Ripon Records


Records and sources for research into the history of Ripon and the surrounding area are widespread. The archives of the Archbishop of York are held by the Borthwick Institute; Dean and Chapter Records are at the Brotherton Library, Leeds University; Ripon Liberty Records are at the West Yorkshire Archive at Wakefield; the Vyner, Newby Hall, and Ingilby of Ripley records are at Leeds District Archives at Sheepscar, Leeds; Ripon Board of Guardian Records, the Ripon City Council Records, back copies of the Ripon Newspapers and the Parish Registers are at the North Yorkshire County Records Office, Northallerton.

The Society has published a Guide to these Historical sources and the many published books and articles available. This is listed on our Publications page.


Ripon Records Project

The Society has also been involved over the years in the Ripon Records Project and co-operates with the Ripon Local Studies Research Centre in this venture. This has been funded by the City Council and its aim is the transfer of these records to Microfilm. Completed films are available in Ripon Library.

The Society has published Hearth Tax Lists for the whole of the North and East Riding, York City, and those Wapentakes of the West Riding not already in print. See our Publications page for details.

An index of the 1851 Census for Ripon, Harrogate, Knaresborough, Boroughbridge and the surrounding areas have been published on microfiche and are to be published on CD Rom. See our publications page for other items available.
